Youth Uprising Screening of Miss Representation (Oakland)
mark the date

March 26, 2013 6:00 PM - March 26, 2013 8:00 PM

The New Parkway Theater is holding a screening of Miss Representation. The screening will also be a fundraiser for Youth Uprising. Purchase tickets online: http://youthuprising.eventbrite.com/# Tickets will be available at the door. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective.

The distribution of Miss Representation is coinciding with a social action campaign to re-envision women as leaders in society. To join the campaign, visit www.missrepresentation.org.

Utility Box Art Project - Hwatu Cards by Joanne Ludwig (Oakland)

Utility Box Statement
The design for this utility box is inspired by the Korean card game Go Stop (Hwatu). When I was a young child my parents went on a long stay in Korea. When they returned they brought back with them the beautiful card deck. I feel in love with the images with elegant positive and negative space, contrasting color and exotic flowers. I have such vivid memories of staying up late and playing together as a family. The cards were a way for us to bond, to laugh, and was a fun introduction to Korean culture.

The cards game originated from Japan and the images were slightly adapted for the Korean and Hawaiian versions. I painted the utility box red to mimic the red cards used in the Korean version of the game. The outline I chose for the card face is taken from the Hawaiian version which has a few more colors and detail. In the deck there are 12 suits, representing months, each with a designated flower. I selected two cards for my design, one card is from the February suit with a bird sitting on a cherry blossom branch and one card is from the June suit, for my grandmother Leticia June, which features the peony flower.

I hope, with the design, the utility box at 27th and Telegraph Avenue willplease the KONO Community with an image that was familiar to the traditional community but also serve as an introduction to Korean Culture to others as it was for me.

It has been an honor to participate in Oakland’s 160th Birthday Beautification Project and to be able to paint an identity marker for the KONO neighborhood. I want to thank Oakland and the KONO District for supporting artist and their community. The best experience was seeing other artist at work and interacting with the community. The feedback and “thank you”s I received from passersby were surprising and absolutely rewarding. This experience made me proud to be both an artist and an Oakland resident.

Artist Biography
Joanne Ludwig is emblazon with a diverse background, her father was a United States Army Sargent who met her mother while he was stationed in Thailand. As a military family, they were forced to relocate several times, giving her the opportunity to live in unique and beautiful landscapes. These early memories left upon her an appreciation of nature, a keen sense of observation, a strong sense of independence and provided a vast canvas for her imagination.

Joanne’s first adventure in painting was at Chabot College under the instruction of Neil Studley, who once commented on her boldness by saying, “When Joanne does something - she does it!” She went on to graduate from Cal State University East Bay with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. Today, Joanne’s spirit of adventure continues by pushing boundaries, exploring art, working in new mediums, and with powerful images - some gracing walls over 6 feet tall.

Look for Joanne and her art around Oakland and within The Hive in Jack London - a busy community of Artist - who open their studio doors every 1st Friday for Oakland Art Murmur.

PopDot Outlet and Florescent Bulb

Pop Art inspired illustrations of contemporary objects that we use every day.

The images selected for my utility boxes are from my PopDot series. The designs are Pop Art inspired graphics on a ground of exaggerated dots. The original series was designed on the computer, printed digitally onto large canvases, and stretched over heavy-duty stretcher bars. For the utility box, I started with the original graphics and re-engineered them to be cut by a laser cutter for creating stencils. Each layer is done with a separate laser cut stencil and spray paint.

Dave Young Kim & Stephanie Leung (Oakland)

May 3, 2012 5:00 PM - October 7, 2012 8:00 PM

DAVE YOUNG KIM
You inspire Dave Young Kim, whether you know him or not. He finds you dynamic in two primary ways: “Physically you can twist, bend, and form a human body into almost any shape—it’s visually dynamic. Secondly, everyone has a story. An individual communicates their emotional and psychological states through facial expression and body language.” It is these two dynamics that energize his work.

Raised in LA county, he won the grand prize trophy in Korea Times Youth Arts Competition at the age of 5 because of his grasp of depth perception. The trophy was taller than he was. His bold, intelligent mother stuck him in advanced art classes at 13, sans prerequisites, where he began working with oils. At UC Davis he studied art practice under the tutelage of Troy Corliss and Wayne Thiebaud.

Currently residing in Oakland, you’ll find his studio stacked with mixed media, oils, acrylic, watercolors, ink, and canvases of every size. In his car you’ll find spray paint tips and rattling crates of spray cans for the graffiti mural work he does for the community.

While his preferred style is raw with signature drips, his hand is also adept at creating neo-impressionistic and traditional styles. Juxtaposed, his range seems unfettered.

“Everyone is so unique in their experiences and memories. I hope each painting evokes an experience that’s personal to them.”

When not painting, he can be found reading a book, looking for cool free stuff on the sidewalk, or volunteering at elementary schools.

Stevan Gutierrez

The title of the piece is "feedback"

My inspiration for this piece is from the observation of creation on a level just past the closed eye visual feeling of existing in a temple seeking the kingdom of heaven within remembering what we put in is what we get back, so as a reminder to myself and to all beings I recreate this pattern found everywhere in nature from sunflowers and pinecones, to the electromagnetic field of our hearts and our planet, with the intention to inspire and co-create a brighter world for the future of humanity.

Stevan Gutierrez is from Albuquerque New Mexico. He has been drawing and painting since the creation of our solar system. Though his ancestors are traditionally carvers, he took another route and decided to be a muralist in 2006. Throughout his practice he has studied under some of the most prestigious bridges in the North American continent, and has painted in cities such as Seattle, Baltimore, Portland, and Maine. He now lives in Oakland, California and works with the Community Rejuvenation Project.

ASHIA TYMOUS
My name is Ashia Tymous, I’m a junior and I attend Oakland School for the Arts.  My idea for the Korean electrical box project is a cherry blossom tree with intricate black lining within it and white dots between the spaces to give it a more complicated yet settle look.  There will be a simple black bird and a tire swing on one of the branches because it reminds me of a swing tire I use to play on everyday with my father as a child.  I hope that’ll supply the viewer with cheerful childhood memories with their family as well. Since the tree is one the left side, the cherry blossoms will be most compacted where the tree stands and fade out around the box.  I plan on using acrylic and trying to keep the image elegant, and possibly doing some type of lace designs around the border to grab attention.  I would hope that if people saw my image that they will feel at peace and refreshed because stress free is the best feeling.  I hope you’ve enjoyed my sketch and idea, thank you very much for your time.  Have a nice day!

About “Pattern for KONO”

“Pattern for KONO” was created specifically for the neighborhood by artist Lynne-Rachel Altman, and brings a unique decorative floral pattern - reminiscent of interior domestic and feminine realms - to the street.

The pattern features the rose of sharon or mugunghwa (hibiscus syriacus), the national flower of South Korea; the meskel daisy (bidens pachyloma), a flower from the mountains of Ethiopia that blooms each year after the rains and represents renewal and the new year; and the coast live oak (quercus agrifolia), which sustained the Ohlone and is the symbol of modern Oakland.

Based on the intricate block-printed wallpaper styles popularized by English Victorian designers, the colorful stenciled mural creates a visual dialog between the romance of the tended English landscape, the current ecological peril, and the “down-to-earth” nature of Oakland.

Employing the decorative-arts tradition of pattern, repetition, and symbolic motifs to communicate, Altman’s piece uses horticulture as a metaphor for multiculturalism. Her resulting vibrant intertwining plants are designed to highlight the beauty of KONO’s cultural diversity and community interconnectedness.

JACK EASTGATE   (Utility Art Box at SW Corner Telegraph & 24th)

I am a Live painter; in each piece I aim to capture Life itself through culture and movement. I translate the details of my personal experiences to paintings. Each piece illustrates an aspect of my journey from the beautiful Fiji Islands to the vibrant, urban hub that is Oakland; I reference the stark contrasts and sometimes surprising similarities through my choices in medium and color. I am very inspired by the beauty and traditions of my homeland, as well as the music and diversity of Oakland. Where these two worlds merge, my work begins.

Jack Eastgate is a Fiji born graphic designer, illustrator, live painter, art educator and muralist. Seven years ago he bought a one-way ticket to Oakland, California and flew across the Pacific Ocean, bringing with him only a few possessions and an open mind. While studying design at California State University East Bay, Jack was introduced to the world of Live painting and has been a part of it ever since.  In painting at cultural events and concerts, Jack translates sound, emotion and movement to canvas. Since receiving his B.A. and launching his design company, Jack Eastgate Studios (formerly known as Fiji Designs LLC), Jack has held several solo and group shows, including Lireille Gallery of Contemporary Jewelry and Art, Oakland, CA (September 2011), Somar Uptown Bar, Oakland, Ca (September 2011) , and Rocketfish Lounge, San Francisco, CA (March 2012-May 2012). More of Jack’s work can be seen in venues around the Bay and on his website www.FijiDesigns.com.

This electrical box is dedicated to woman warrior, Ericka Huggins. Ericka lead Oakland's Community School from many years, was an integral part of the local Black Panther Party, and even suffered as a political prisoner for two years. Ericka has been a pillar of the community for many years. She remains accessible and down to earth. Ericka has a unique mask that covers her face and the back of her head to protect her and support her purpose. Ericka is quoted on the box saying that "Love is a powerful tool. Use it to change the world."

Originally from Chicago, Desi mastered his aerosol craft on transportation vehicles and commute areas since 1990. Desi contributed a unique "mask" letter style to aerosol culture in the 90s under the tutelage of Chicago subway legends ZORE, RAVEN, NYKE, and ATTICA. Desi continues to be a student of letters and continues to elaborate and diversify his intricate styles of writing under the eyes of aerosol pioneers P.H.A.S.E.2 and VULCAN. Desi's early influences in murals, characters, and backgrounds came from ZORE, RAFA, RAVEN, GTEK and Ivan Watkins as well as the murals of Astrid Fuller and Caryl Yasko in the viaducts of his Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. In recent years, Desi has grown from collaborations with fellow Weapons of Mass Expression MIke 360 and ReMinD, as well as the diverse styles included in the Community Rejuvenation Project, a collective that he founded in 2005. Desi has been fortunate to paint murals throughout the US including New York, Seattle, San Francisco, Albuquerque, Denver, and sovereign indigenous community such as the Northern Cheyenne at Lame Deer and the Lakota at Wounded Knee. Desi is currently involved in shaping the abatement policy of Oakland and Richmond and transforming blighted communities throughout the Bay Area with the Community Rejuvenation Project. David Polka is a visual artist and graphic designer currently based in Oakland, CA.  Originally from Las Cruces, New Mexico, he is a graduate of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and has been exhibiting work professionally since 2006.

Drawing inspiration from abandoned and neglected places, stories and people, Polka's work distills the ephemeral nature of human experience into a visual record of accumulated memories and emotions.  Flowing, abstract forms envelop figures weary from loss and hardship in an exploration of transitory connections.  Reflecting a myriad of aesthetic influences including Native American art, graffiti, anime, and Colonial and Byzantine devotional art, these images examine how personal interactions are fostered and eroded by adversity, revealing the lines connecting different facets of our existence with irrevocable patterns of life and death, destruction and rebirth.  To view his latest work, visit davidpolka.com.

TITLE OF BOX-2012 REALITY CHECK IN

All Art is propaganda. From this simple idea my design took shape. Using the following elements; computer graphics, collage , specific colors and the use of thoughtful words, I have attempted to capture the viewer’s attention. For a brief  moment I get them to internalize both the visual and deeper meanings of the following words. “Don’t Hate- CREATE; GET BUSY; The will-SKILL." The acrylic paint used is color specific in attracting the viewer to step in closer for a better reading of the designs and words.
My hope is that more work that not only is attractive, but carries a subliminal message of support for the community, will become the vehicle which will continue to propel its growth and diversity.

Abstract Art for Everyone: "LineScaping" is a minimalist abstract art that appeals to all people, regardless of their background and regardless of their previous experience with fine art. I want to place LineScaping art on the Oakland streets because I believe it is fun to have this on the street. This art will give people ?!?!?? moments when they see it. The optical illusion makes it not only look 3 dimensional, but also it looks as if it?s moving when you look at it. People will be urged to touch it to learn that it is actually a flat surface they are looking at. ALL LINES ARE PAINTED ONE BY ONE FREEHAND
